ABOHAR: Expressing shock at a proposal to stop the supply of water in canals in the Abohar area from March 17 for maintenance, local farmers have demanded the plan be put off by a fortnight.
The irrigation authority’s nave announced that supply in the Malukpura distributor and the Daulatpura and Ramsara minor canals would be stopped as the department needed to clean the channels. The supply would resume in the first week of April.
However, farmers say the wheat crop needs one last irrigation. If that were not done, the crop would suffer, said Akshay Bishnoi of the BKU (Lakhowal). The maintenance should be postponed by a fort night, by when the crop would have matured. While the irrigation authorities want to use up funds before the end of the financial year, Ferozepur DC Kamal Kishore Yadav said he would find a solution.
