AMRITSAR: Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council has awarded scholar ships to 46 meritorious students of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) on the basis of a written test conducted by the council.
Presiding over the function, GNDU Vice-Chancellor Prof A.S. Brar, who distributed the scholarships, said rural children are more deprived as com pared to their urban counter parts in all fields. “The gap is widening by the day and the growth of all sections of society is not equal as claimed by various NGOs and government,” he said.
Besides providing scholar ships to poor and needy students, GNDU recently gave fee concession to 510 students, the Vice-Chancellor said.
Prof Brar said the university is planning to start vocational courses to make students self-dependent. “The university is going to submit a proposal to the government for providing IIT entrance’ lest coaching to 50 to 100 students from rural background and having family income less than Rs 2 lakh per annum. To help students develop confidence, a personality development course for all students of the university, except those from management, will be started,” he said.
Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council founder president Harbhajan Singh Sahni said the council has been running its welfare programmes by raising donations from India and abroad.
Besides providing scholar ships to the needy, intelligent students studying technical as well professional courses in various colleges and universities are also being helped monetarily, he said.
“Helping economically backward people of the society are the biggest service of the mankind,” Sahni said.
