AMRITSAR NEWS: Cameras To Secure Harmandar Sahib
AMRITSAR: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak committee (SGPC) on Wednesday awarded the contract for installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras at Harmandar Sahib.
The winning bid was from Vantage, a company specializing in integrated security solutions, which has been asked to complete the work in six months.
SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said the cameras would help them guard the holy shrine against various kinds of threat as well as prevent thefts and picking of pockets.
A panel comprising SGPC members Rajinder Singh Mehta and Gurbachan Singh Karmuwala and secretary Dalmegh Singh, assisted by Brig Vijay Chopra (retd) as consultant, finalized the technical and financial bids.
While wireless (Wi-Fi) CCTV cameras would be installed inside and outside-the gold plated structure of the sanctum sanctorum, cable-connected cameras would be used at other sensitive points, including Darshani Deodi and the Parikarma. Cameras would also be installed at the temporal seat of Akal Takht, Langar Hall and the serais (inns) in the complex.
The project is expected to cost more than Rs 2 crore. As per the agreement, the exact payment would be on the basis of total number of cameras actually used. The SGPC decided to install CCTV cameras at Harmandar Sahib after it received anonymous letters threatening to blow up the shrine.
As the police are prohibited inside the shrine, security is a challenge given the fact that on an average more than 1 lakh people visit the place every day. At present, the SGPC’s own “task force” provides the security cover.
