AMRITSAR: Roop Singh, additional secretary, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), addressed the closing ceremony of Parliament of the World’s Religions at Melbourne, Australia, on Wednesday.
Over 5,000 persons from more than a dozen faiths and hundreds of sects from around the world attended the closing.
The parliament was held between December 3 and 9, on the theme of “Make a World of Difference: Hearing Each Other, Healing the Earth”. Leaders of different world religions spoke on problems such as poverty, ignorance, crisis of ethics, and the environment.
The Dalai Lama, Dadi Janki, and Archbishop Phillip Freier joined Roop Singh at the closing ceremony, which had a significant Sikh presence. Around 200 Sikhs from all over the world participated. Roop Singh
I attended the ceremony on behalf of Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh.
“I have brought for the entire humanity a message of mutual respect and universal brotherhood from Sri Harmandar Sahib, Amritsar, the holy place of worship for all and the centre for the betterment of humanity,” he said in his address. Representatives of Sikh Interfaith’ Council of Victoria, Gurdwaras of Melbourne, Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha, Sikh Dharma International, Sikhs Helping Sikhs, United Sikhs, and World Sikh Council America region attended.
