BATALA: The local Bar association observed strike on Monday against the arrest of advocate Sukhbir Singh, a practicing lawyer at Batala court, for his “role” in the Khanna Chumara shootout. They have warned of statewide protests.
Two farmers were shot dead by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) task force for possession of land. In a press release, the association said that an urgent meeting of the Punjab Bar Association Action Committee had unanimously decided to suspend work at courts statewide against the alleged illegal arrest of advocate Sukhbir Singh.
Farm organizations – the Kriti Kissan Union, Bharatiya Kissan Union (Ugrah) and Jamuhari Kissan Sabha – have condemned the strike call. They said Sukhbir Singh was in pos session of the power of attorney of the disputed land and was the nephew of SGPC member Amrik Singh Shahpura.
It was under his directions that the task force opened fire at the innocent farmers at Khanna Chumara, leaving two dead, they said. A deputation of these farmers unions later met SSP, Batala, and demanded the arrest of the remaining accused. They also demanded action against SPGC president Avtar Singh Makkar, secretary Dilmeg Singh and task force chief Kashmir Singh.
