BATALA: Congress leaders have demanded the arrest of two ‘influential’ youth of Kila Lal Singh village who abducted and raped a teenaged village girl on February 1.
A deputation of party leaders, including Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee spokes men Ashwani Sekhri and former minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, met SP (Headquarters) Vipin Chowdhary. They accused the police of playing into the hands of ruling party leaders.
They alleged that even nine days after the incident, the police had failed to arrest the accused, who were moving freely and threatening the victim’s family to withdraw their complaint.
The Congress leaders warned that if the police did not arrest the accused by February 17, they would stage a dharnn out side the Kila Lal Singh police station. The girl’s parents have also demanded the arrest of the accused.
When contacted, Batala SSP D.P. Singh said the police had registered a case after the victim’s family approached them. He said the police were raiding all possible hideouts of the accused.
