BATALA: The deadline for the inquiry into the communal clash here on February 22 has lapsed but the “time-bound inquiry” by Gurdaspur Additional Deputy Commissioner K.P. Singh is yet to begin.
Curfew was clamped in the town after a church was torched, shops were looted and vehicles damaged by miscreants following a clash between members of the Christian and Hindu communities over a poster depicting Jesus Christ in an objectionable manner. Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner S.R. Ladhar marked a magisterial probe under the supervision of the Gurdaspur ADC.
The report was to be submitted within 15 days.
On the orders of the Commissioner, the eight persons taken into custody by the police for destroying public property worth lakhs were released allegedly under political pressure.
Simultaneously, the commissioner ordered the Batala SSP to inquire into the case a fresh.
None of the orders were carried out. Asked about the delay, Additional Deputy Commissioner K.P. Singh said ‘he had “several responsibilities to perform and could not spare enough time for this purpose”. He, however, assured that he would complete the probe as soon as possible.
Ladhar was not available for comment, while Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner Karamjit Singh Sra said he was out of town and would take up the matter on reaching office.
Batala SSP D.P. Singh said action would be taken as per the probe report.
