CHAND PURANA (MOGA): A father walked in on a secret rendezvous between his 17 -year-old daughter and the youth she had affection for and shot them dead at this Moga village on Wednesday night, as per reports. Jagtar Singh then fled the scene.
The village stood by the barbaric act and the police were not informed.
The girl was a Jat Sikh. The 22-year-old she was in love with was a Dalit student of an Industrial Training Institute (ITI), preliminary investigation had revealed. It could well be a case of honour killing, police said, even as they would wait for the investigation to wrap up before they confirm or deny.
Moga SSP Snehdep Sharma confirmed the gruesome incident and said the deceased had been identified as Lovepreet Kaur and Harjinder Singh.
The two had been acquainted for many months, as per investigation. Harjinder had come to the house to meet the girl at around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, which set off the alleged murders.
Investigation Officer Partap Singh said on hearing gunshots, Harjinder’s brother, who was waiting outside, ran into the house. A bullet caught him in the thigh and he was admitted to a hospital. He was later referred to the DMC, Ludhiana.
An FIR under sections 302,307 IPC has been registered against Jagtar Singh at Bagha Purana Police Station. The SSP said the accused would be arrested soon.
The bodies have been sent for post mortem at the local civil hospital.
