CHANDIGARH: An autonomous National School of Sports with three centres of sports excellence at SAS Nagar, Jalandhar and Bathinda has been proposed in the draft of Punjab’s new Sports Policy to hunt the state’s budding sports talent and nurture it with specialized training.
Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who also holds the sports portfolio, on Saturday, had detailed deliberations with veteran sports personalities, administrators, senior officers of the Sports Department on the draft policy and various suggestions received all over the country before it is posted on the website.
Sukhbir said Punjab had lagged behind in sports partially due to lack of focus, thin spread of precious resources and maladministration of various sports bodies headed by non professionals. He said the Sports Policy would identify 10 sporting disciplines in which the state had prospects of winning medals in international competitions.
He said the proposed centres of excellence would have requisite sports infrastructure of international standards, with each centre handling three to four disciplines. He said these centres, set up with private participation, would be financially self-sufficient and has a new financial model.
Focusing on the two-pronged strategy of financially rewarding players and giving them due recognition, Sukhbir said the Sports Department should organize inter-school and inter-college competitions in each district and declare the best player as the District Player in every sport and honour them with blazers and handsome cash awards to attract youth towards sports.
He said time had come to hunt talent right from the nursery level, spot budding players and provide specialized training to medal prospects.
Expressing concern over 3 per cent sports quota vacancies in each department, Sukhbir asked the Sports Secretary to coordinate with the Personnel Department to launch a special drive to clear the backlog. He also asked the Sports Secretary to explore the possibility of each board or corporation supporting a team in one sport.
