CHANDIGARH: Even as Pakistan has taken back 22 of its nationals waiting for repatriation at Amritsar Central Jail after completion of their sentence, it has refused to accept 10 others without assigning any reason.
Most of these Pak nationals, arrested for visa law violations or possessing arms or narcotics, had completed their sentences years ago, and were languishing in a “transit camp” of the Amritsar Jail.
It looks a series of meetings for the Indian Authorities to convince their Pakistan counterpart’s to accept their own nationals. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Justice told Pakistan they were violating the human rights of the people who had completed their sentences, besides putting additional financial and security burden on the India.
According to a senior Punjab prisons official, each foreign national who has completed the sentence is paid Rs 100 per day under court orders. Besides, the jail has to spend on their food, shelter and other daily needs. They are kept in transit camps as per rules.
As for the 10 nationals Pakistan has refused to take back, it has given no reason despite the fact that India and given their personal details for verification back home. Punjab has written to the MHA, urging it to take up their case with Pak counterparts again.
Among them is Abdul Sharif of Dekhsabar police station area in Balochistan, who was arrested in April 1997 for illegally crossing over into India. His three- month sentence ended on July 17, 1997, but he continues to live in the Amritsar jail.
Shukha Ghosh, daughter of Kiran Mohan Ghosh of Pakistan, was arrested on July 5, 1999, under the National Security Act. Sentenced to two years in jail, she completed the punishment on October 10, 2000.
Similarly, Altaf-ur-Rehman of Karachi was arrested in 2002 and sentenced to one-year imprisonment , while Mohmmad Aslam Khan of Musargabad Miannir Colony In Lahore was arrested in 2003 and sentenced to eight months.
With Pakistan refusing to take them back, their wait has just been prolonged indefinitely.
