GURDASPUR: The Punjab Cabinet at its next meeting is expected to clear a sports policy for the state.
This was stated by Punjab Minister for Information and Public Relations Sewa Singh Sekhwan after inaugurating a four-day “Babbehali Chhinjh” (wrestling extravaganza) at Babbehali village, 5 Ian from here, on Saturday.
The new policy would aim to bolster the basic sports infra structure in the state. Sekhwan said budding players would be identified at the village level to be trained for top national and international events. They would be provided with the latest sports infrastructure right at the village level.
He said the state government was offering Rs 50,000 to every gram panchayat for purchasing sports goods, besides providing funds for gymnasium halls.
Sekhwan also announced a grant of Rs 1 lakh for the village mela committee. He said Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal would give away prizes to the winners on August 31, concluding day of the Chhinjh.
