CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday turned down social activist Swami Agnivesh’s plea seeking to quash an FIR filed against him for allegedly hurting Hindu sentiments.
“Averments made in the FIR regarding utterances attributed to the petitioner do prima facie make out a case under Section 295-A of IPC because such utterances certainly hurt the religious feelings of Hindus who under take the holy Amarnath yatra,” Justice LN Mittal said.
Earlier this year various Hindu organizations had castigated Agnivesh for his “blasphemous” remarks on the Amarnath yatra. A case under Section 295A of IPC (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings or any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) was registered against him on May 23 in Hansi, Haryana after a complaint was lodged by social activist Praveen Tayal.
