HISAR: It was a proud moment for 66-year-old Bhateri Devi as she shared her bundles of joy with the media here on Sunday. Battling complications of age, Bhateri became the oldest known mother of triplets after she gave birth to two boys and a girl here on May 29.
The triplets were born to her 44 years after she married Deva Singh (64).
“Bhateri Devi of Satrod village Hisar district conceived with in-vitro fertilization (IVF) technique at the National Fertility Centre here,” Dr Anurag Bishnoi, the treating specialist, told mediapersons here on Sunday.
He said Bhateri conceived in the third attempt and became a mother for the first time. “For the first two attempts, only two embryos were transferred in each cycle. But in the third attempt, three embryos were transferred in her uterus, resulting in the birth of three children by Caesarean section,” Dr Bishnoi said.
Bhateri was born on May 21, 1944, at Madina village of Rohtak and her birth record is confirmed by the birth certificate issued by the district hospital in Rohtak. “As the proof of her age is documented, she becomes the oldest woman in the world to give birth to triplets,” he said.
Meanwhile, her husband Deva Singh said he had married twice after marrying
Bhateri as she was unable to conceive. Though Deva Singh says his test reports were normal, the three marriages could ‘not bear him a child. Only Bhateri stayed with him.
“It is the eldest wife who has made me proud and given me an heir. Old is gold,” Deva Singh said with a smile.
Dr Bishnoi says women here now insist on IVF as a cure for infertility rather than going to quacks.
In November 2008, 70-year old Rajo Devi made headlines after she delivered Naveen, a healthy baby girl, following an in-vitro fertility treatment at the Hisar centre.
