JALANDHAR: Eight Akali councillors and six leaders resigned from the party on Friday over police failure to take action against employees in the assault on Senior Deputy Mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia.
Bhatia said the leaders include SAD general council member Prof Gurbachan Singh Popli, working committee member Pritam Singh, All India Youth Akali Dal senior vice president Parminder Pal Singh Khalsa, vice president Surinder Pal Singh Goldy and joint secretary Paramjit Singh Gill.
The councillors are Deputy Mayor Parvesh Tangri, Kamaljit Singh Gandhi, Manjit Singh Titu, Gurdeep Singh Nagra, Balbir Singh Bittu, Paramjit Singh Reru, Surjit Kaur and Bhatia himself.
Protesting Akali workers blocked traffic at Guru Nanak Mission Chowk, demanding an FIR against the MC employees and their dismissal from service. They also demanded that SHO Surinder Pal face the sack for not taking timely action in the Thursday clash.
Employee unions, on the other hand, have demanded legal action against Bhatia and Tangri for using abusive language and misbehavior, and warned of a state-level indefinite strike.
Earlier, corporation employees held a peace march between Company Chowk and Jyoti Chowk. Nigam Safai Mazdoor Union president Chandan Grewal claimed that in a meeting with the commissioner, it was decided that public works function as usual on Saturday. “MG unions will meet on Saturday to decide the future course of action. If action is not taken against the accused SAD leaders by Monday, we will go on strike,” he added.
SSP R.K. Jaiswal told reporters a cross case has been registered.
