JALANDHAR: The constable recruitment criterion of the Punjab Police has come under scanner with applicants questioning the rationale behind giving extra weightage to height and higher educational qualification of a candidate.
The applicants say it has happened for the first time the weightage is being given on these two counts. They said this time no written test will be held, while the interview will be of two marks.
Earlier, a written test was of 100 marks with a 15-marks interview. As per an advertisement for the recruitment published on February 28, candidates having M.Phil, Ph.D and LLM degrees will get 20 marks weightage. A 55-65 per cent score in degree will get them 21 marks and 21.5 marks for above 65 percent. Plus Two candidates will get 10, 11 and 11.5 marks, respectively. Candidates, who have passed first-year of graduation with more than 55 per cent, 55 to 65 per cent and above 65 per cent marks, will get 12, 13 and 13.5 marks, respectively. Iri case of second-year, they will get 14, 15 and 15.5 marks.
Graduates will get 16, 17 and 17.5, while postgraduates and candidates having LLB, M.Sc, MCA, MBBS, MP.Ed, BDS or an equivalent degree will get 18, 19 and 19.5 marks.
A height of 6 feet and above will fetch 20 marks. For 5 feet 11.5 inch, 5 feet 11 inch, 5 feet, 10.5 inch, 5 feet 10 inch, 5 feet 9.5 inch, 5 feet 9 inch, 5 feet 8.5 inch, 5 feet 8 inch, 5 feet 7.5 inch and 5 feet 7 inch, 19, 18, 17, 16,15, 14, 13, 12, 11 and 10 marks will be given, respectively.
In case of female candidates, the weightage for educational qualification remains the same. The minimum height of a candidate being 5 feet 3 inch and the maximum up to 5 feet 8 inch and above.
A candidate, who was here to submit his form, said the criteria would mar the chances of candidates who are short in height and are less qualified.
Deputy Director, District Sainik Welfare Department, Col Manmohan Singh (retd) said the criterion is against the capable and talented candidates. The top brass of the department should review the decision, he said. DGP P.S. Gill could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
