KAPURTHALA: Media can play a key role in carrying scientific knowledge and concepts to lay persons and help them develop a scientific temper, Dr Manoj Patairiya, Director, Science and Technology department of Government of India, said on Monday.
Dr Patairiya, who was speaking at a seminar on science Journalism at Pushpa Gujral Science City, said a scientific temperament will allow the common man to benefit from advances in science and technology and fight hunger, drought, disease, and social evils like superstition etc. with courage and faith.
Science City played host to an exciting and innovative debate on science journalism in which several eminent professionals and over 250 students from different universities and colleges participated.
Dr Patairiya, who is also the editor of Indian Journal of Science and Communications, enumerated the trends in science journalism, now emerging in India. He said that science coverage attributed to mass media is about 3.4 per cent in the print medium and 2.2 per cent in the electronic media, which was far below the desired level of 10 per cent as per UN resolutions.
Jalandhar Doordarshan Director Dr Daljit Singh, who presided the seminar, said science and religion were not at odds. He said DD Jalandhar was focused on making programmes that convey that view.
Hasan Jawaid Khan, Editor, Science Reporter, published by National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (CSIR) underscored issues related with effective and meaningful science communication.
He said the success of human civilization rests solely on the’ human ability to communicate. “While it is undeniable that science and technology have changed the way of life,” he said.

Science City Director General Dr R.S. Khandpur said in his welcome address that science and technology have progres sively developed in India in terms of quality and quantity.
Dr Khandpur stressed the need to train professional jour nalists in science so that they could explain advances in terms that the lay person can under stand.
