NAKODAR: Hundreds of activists of the Punjab Mazdoor Union staged a dharna in front of the block development and panchayat office here on Monday, seeking implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).
Union leaders alleged that NREGS beneficiaries had not been paid for months. They claimed that the authorities were using machines for manual work.
Union leaders alleged that due to the ‘anti-worker’ attitude of the Nakodar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and the Block Development and Panchayat Officer (BDPO), works under the scheme had been stooped.
They said the matter had been brought to the notice of senior officials, but to no avail. They warned that if the SDM and BDPO did not change their attitude, the organization would start a day-and-night dharna.
PMU president Tarsem Peter said instead of releasing payments to workers, the authorities were using machines for manual work.
