NURMAHAL NEWS: 26 Kiln labourers Freed On HC Order
NURMAHAL: The Phillaur SDM, Naib Tehsildar and SHO released 26 migrant labourers at B.K. Brick-kiln in the near by Dhani village on Wednesday evening.
SDM Pritam Singh said that the action followed the Punjab and Haryana High Court orders to the Jalandhar District Magistrate on February 25 to inquire into averments made in a criminal writ petition and submit a report to the court. The court ordered the district magistrate to also exercise power vested in him under the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act.
The SDM said that those freed were not bonded labourers as alleged in the writ petition. He said the inquiry report would be submitted to the court on March 15, the next date of hearing.
The labourers said they were working at the kiln for six months and wanted to return home.
However, sources said unscrupulous elements were exploiting the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act by filing such petitions.
