SUNAM (SANGRUR): Charan Dass, a retired junior engineer of the Punjab State Electricity Board, attempted self-immolation on Wednesday in protest against the Nagar Council’s alleged failure to remove an encroachment by his neighbour.
Dass climbed up a council water tank and raised slogans against the NC and the police He sprinkled petrol on his body and set himself ablaze. Engulfed in flames, he rushed downstairs and collapsed. People gathered at the spot rushed him to the Civil Hospital, from where he was referred to a Patiala hospital in a critical condition.
His sons Vijay inder Kumar and Rakesh Kumar told reporters that Dass was upset over the NC’s inaction on his complaint against their neighbour, who had erected a shed in the street.
“The police booked us for apprehension of breach of peace under Sections 107 and 151 of the CrPC,” they lamented.
DSP Pritpal Singh Thind, who reached the spot, said the encroachment issue was sub judice in a local court.
