PATIALA: Eight months after being attacked by illegal occupants of panchayat land at Dudhar village near here, district administration officials arrived with police force on Sunday and took possession of 111 acre of government land.
The officials said the land was in the possession of 30 illegal occupants, who refused to vacate the land despite orders from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The police, who arrived with a riot-control vehicle, resorted to mild cane-charge to disperse protesters opposing the eviction. Several people were taken into custody.
District Development and Panchayat Officer Daljit Singh Virk said despite High Court orders, the occupants were not vacating the land. He said eight months ago, when a team of district administration officials reached the villages they were attacked by illegal occupants:
“Today, we went to the village with adequate force and took 111 acres into possession. Of this, 85 acre was leased out for cultivation for Rs 8.5 lakh,” he said.
The administration did not take possession of another 36 acre in view of the court’s stay order, he added.
