ROHTAK: Shribhagwan Legha of Samaspur village has been asked to part ways with his wife Anita Phougat within a week by the Phougat Barha Khap which has ordained the alliance is against social norms.
Former chief minister Hukam Singh presided the khap as it convened at Dadri town in Bhiwani on Sunday.
It was decided that two khap representatives will accompany Randhir Singh Legha, father of Shribhagwan, who works for Rajasthan police and lives at Jaipur, to Rajasthan to bring back the couple and start proceedings for their legal separation.
The khap, while putting its seal of approval on the decision of the panchayat of five villages to annul the marriage, has called for a social boycott of Randhir Singh Legha’s family if the couple does not return.
The khap’s rationale: Phougat gotra community, which the bride comes from, is in majority at Samaspur village, which makes her their daughter.
The youth’s father, Legha said he did not approve of the marriage and had disowned his son. He said he was willing to go to Jaipur as per the khap’s diktat to bring the couple back.
Anita’s father Azad Singh, too, has said that he will abide by the khap’s diktat to annul the marriage.
The khap will meet after a week to review the matter.
