SIRSA: Under distress over her son’s arrest in connection with the burning of a bus last week, Savitri (55), a resident of Kusser village in this district, set her self on fire on Tuesday. She died on the spot.
Her husband Jai Chand, accompanied by village elders, was in Sirsa at the time of the incident to seek the release of his son, Jagdeesh, on the grounds that he was innocent and had been wrongly implicated by the police.
A JBT teacher, Jagdeesh was among three persons sent in judicial custody after several buses were set on fire by alleged followers of Dera Sacha Sauda on February 27.
As news of Savitri’s self immolation spread, several Dera supporters and other villagers gathered at her house in Kusser village, leading to tension in the area. Angry over the way the police was handling Jagdeesh’s case, villagers blamed the cops for Savitri’s death.
The’ family refused to cremate the body and also refused to allow a post-mortem, demanding immediate release of Jagdeesh.
While Superintendent of Police (SP) S.K. Gupta was not available for comment, SHO Maha Singh confirmed Jagdeesh was in custody in the case related to the burning of a Haryana Roadways bus. He said that Savitri’s family had not given any complaint regarding the alleged self-immolation. He said prima facie, it appeared to be a case involving some domestic matter.
Meanwhile, Dera spokesperson Pawan Insan accused the police of implicating innocent people for the recent violent protests.
