SURREY (CANADA): One of Canada’s most colorful and controversial Sikh broadcasters appeared in court on Monday to face a series of charges related to a weekend shooting at a gurdwara that left a rival in hospital.
Radio India managing director Maninder Gill is facing five firearms counts for allegedly shooting at Surrey contractor Harjit Singh Atwal last Saturday in the parking lot of Guru Nanak Gurdwara on 120th Street. Gill has been on air with his Surrey-based Radio India since August 1999. A former concert promoter, the broad caster- has been at the forefront of Indo-Canadian community campaigns against violence against women gangs, drugs.
Gill, 47, looked relaxed but solemn during his short appearance in courtroom 101 in Surrey, along with his high profile defence lawyer Richard Peck.
Surrey RCMP media officer Canst Peter Neily said Gill turned himself in after police issued a warrant for his arrest.
Gill, who has no criminal record has been charged with to counts of discharging a firearm with intent and one each of pointing a firearm, pos session of a firearm for a dangerous purpose and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
Atwal, 54, remained in hospital on Monday, recovering from a single gunshot wound to the thigh.
The shooting took place after both men started arguing at a wedding they were attending.
The men had been feuding for weeks – Atwal, an associate named Jaspal Atwal (no relation) and a third man named Harkirat Kular, had filed a civil suit against Gill, Radio India and several of its journalists on August 3 in relation to broad casts in May they said were untrue and defamatory.
Gill and Radio India host Sukhminder Singh Cheema have med complaints with the RCMP over the past three months, claiming they have been threatened.
Investigators identified their suspect based on witness accounts at the wedding, which was attended by close to 1,000 people. Gill is due back in court on Wednesday for a bail hearing. Atwal is a former member of the now banned International Sikh Youth Federation.
